This fabulous matched pair of 1970's hand built studio art pottery lantern style candle holders have been made in the form of a man and woman and resemble a happy bride and groom on their big day. The candle holders are finished in a dark chocolate brown glaze and have a columnar form with openings at the front made to accommodate votives or pillar candles. The set have arm-like knob handles at either side and large holes in the tops of their heads to allow heat and/or smoke to escape.
As seen in the accompanying photographs, the set has been made with a lot of whimsical detail. The man is dressed in formal attire including a top hat and three button coat with tails. His round head has simple stylized facial features and sports a large dimensional moustache. The lady also has a round head finished with short textural bobbed hair which frames her smiling face.
The candle holders are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As hand finished items, it should be noted that there are anomalies in the decoration including irregularities in glaze application and small pops in the glaze itself which are noted for accuracy. The male candleholder stands 14.5" tall and the female candleholder is 12" tall. The pieces are 5.75" as measured from the outside points of their knob handles. The feet are 3.75" in diameter and bear the artist signature and date 1976 on the underside. The set has a combined weight of 5lbs 12oz
These charming and unusual candle lanterns display beautifully and can be used as decorative accents or employed as candle holders/lanterns on a table or mantelpiece. A unique and appealing vintage find!
